چکیده

Baker and Nuttle [1] studied the following single-variable-resource scheduling problem: sequencing n jobs for processing by a single resource to minimize a function of job completion times, when the availability of the resource varies over time. When the objective function to be minimized is the total weighted completion time, Baker and Nuttle conjectured that the problem is NP-hard. We show in this note that the conjecture is true.

Approximability of total weighted completion time with resource consuming jobs

In this paper we study an extension of the single machine scheduling problem with the total weighted completion time objective, where there is a single non-renewable resource consumed by the jobs, having an initial stock and some additional replenishments over time. We prove that this problem is NP-hard in the strong sense, and provide an FPTAS for a special case with two supply dates.

Is a Unit - Time Job Shop Not Easierthan

This paper gives the positive answer to the question posed in the title for a wide class of minimization criteria including the maximum completion time, maximum lateness , total completion time, total weighted completion time, total tardiness, total weighted tardiness, number of late jobs and the weighted number of late jobs. That is any scheduling problem for m identical parallel machines to m...

Minimizing Total Weighted Tardiness in a Flexible Flowshop Environment Considering Batch Processing Machines

Scheduling in production environments is used as a competitive tool to improve efficiency and respond to customer requests. In this paper, a scheduling problem is investigated in a three-stage flexible flowshop environment with the consideration of blocking and batch processing. This problem has been inspired by the charging and packaging line of a large battery manufacturer. In this environmen...

An Iterated Greedy Algorithm for Flexible Flow Lines with Sequence Dependent Setup Times to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time

This paper explores the flexile flow lines where setup times are sequence- dependent. The optimization criterion is the minimization of total weighted completion time. We propose an iterated greedy algorithm (IGA) to tackle the problem. An experimental evaluation is conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm and, then, the obtained results of IGA are compared against those of some other exist...

A Lower Bound for the Weighted Completion Time Variance Problem

We consider a single machine scheduling problem to minimize the weighted completion time variance. This problem is known to be NP-hard in the strong sense. We propose a lower bound based on splitting of jobs and the Viswanathkumar and Srinivasan procedure and a heuristic. The test on more than 2000 instances shows that this lower bound is very tight.
